A quick and easy recipe for fluffy French toast hearts stuffed with a creamy strawberry and cream cheese filling, perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick brioche or challah bread (about 1-inch thick)
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and chopped
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened (full-fat preferred)
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup milk or heavy cream (180 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Butter, 2 tablespoons for cooking (unsalted)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Optional toppings: maple syrup, fresh strawberry slices, whipped cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cream cheese filling: In a medium bowl, whisk together softened cream cheese, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, and chopped strawberries until well combined but still slightly chunky. Set aside.
  2. Cut your bread: Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter or mold, cut out hearts from the bread slices. You’ll need two identical hearts per stuffed piece.
  3. Assemble the stuffed hearts: Spread about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese and strawberry mixture on one bread heart. Top with another heart, gently pressing the edges to seal the filling inside.
  4. Make the batter: In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk or heavy cream, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt until smooth and slightly frothy.
  5. Dip the stuffed hearts: Immerse each sandwich in the egg batter, letting it soak for about 20-30 seconds per side. Avoid oversoaking to prevent sogginess.
  6. Heat your pan: Warm butter over medium heat in a nonstick skillet until melted and gently bubbling.
  7. Cook the french toast hearts: Place the batter-soaked hearts in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy. Flip carefully to avoid spilling the filling.
  8. Serve warm: Dust with powdered sugar and add maple syrup or fresh strawberries if desired.

Notes

Do not oversoak the bread in the batter to prevent sogginess. Use thick slices of bread for best results. Medium heat is ideal to cook evenly without burning. Press edges firmly to seal filling and chill assembled sandwiches for 10 minutes before dipping to prevent leaks. For fluffier batter, use heavy cream. Optional spices like nutmeg or cardamom can add warmth.
