This rich, velvety crockpot peppermint hot chocolate is the perfect cozy drink for cold nights. Made with simple pantry ingredients and slow-cooked to perfection, it tastes like Christmas in a mug.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk (1.4 liters)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (240 ml)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (340 grams)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (45 grams)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100 grams)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Mini marshmallows (for serving)
  • Crushed peppermint candies (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt.
  2. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Stir to combine.
  3. Whisk the cocoa mixture into the milk and cream until no dry streaks remain, about 1 minute.
  4. Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips on top; do not stir.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 hours. After 1 hour, stir to incorporate melted chocolate chips, then cover again.
  6. After 2 hours, stir in the vanilla extract and peppermint extract. Taste and adjust peppermint if desired.
  7. Switch the slow cooker to WARM setting to keep hot chocolate drinkable for up to 3 hours. If too thick, whisk in a splash of warm milk.
  8. Ladle into mugs, top with mini marshmallows and crushed peppermint candies. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not cook on HIGH heat to avoid scorching the milk. Whisk cocoa powder with sugar first to prevent lumps. Peppermint extract potency varies; taste before adding more. For dairy-free, use oat milk and full-fat canned coconut cream. For gluten-free, ensure peppermint candies are certified gluten-free. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and reheated gently.
