This cozy overnight apple cinnamon dump cake requires just five minutes of prep and delivers incredible flavor. Letting it rest overnight transforms the apples into a jammy texture and the topping into a buttery crunch, making it the perfect comfort food for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Honeycrisp or Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch thick slices. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  2. Spread apple slices evenly in an ungreased 9×13 baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Sprinkle evenly over apples.
  4. Sprinkle the entire box of yellow cake mix evenly over the cinnamon-sugar apples. Do not stir.
  5. Distribute cold butter cubes evenly over the cake mix.
  6. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove dish from refrigerator and let sit for 10 minutes.
  8. Bake covered with foil for 40 minutes, then remove foil and bake for 15-20 minutes more until top is golden brown and apples are bubbling.
  9. Let cake rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Do not skip the overnight rest for best texture. Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith. Distribute butter cubes evenly to avoid dry patches. Cover tightly with foil to prevent steam escape. Let cake rest after baking to allow juices to settle.
