A quick and easy Halloween appetizer featuring a creamy black bean dip with a spooky sour cream spiderweb design. Perfect for parties, it’s made with simple pantry ingredients and ready in under 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (plus 1/4 cup for the spiderweb design)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • A few dashes hot sauce (optional, e.g., Cholula)
  • Tortilla chips for serving
  • Sliced black olives for spider decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Ensure cream cheese is at room temperature (if forgotten, microwave for 10-15 seconds).
  2. Drain and rinse black beans in a colander under cold water for about 30 seconds; shake off excess water.
  3. In a food processor, combine black beans, softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup sour cream, 3/4 cup shredded cheddar (reserve 1/4 cup for topping), minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, lime juice, and hot sauce (if using). Pulse 8-10 times, then run continuously for about 30 seconds until smooth (like hummus texture). Scrape down sides halfway through.
  4. Taste the dip and adjust seasoning as needed.
  5. Transfer dip to an 8×8-inch or 9-inch round oven-safe baking dish. Spread into an even layer (about 1 to 1.5 inches thick). Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup shredded cheddar on top.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes until hot and bubbly around the edges. Do not overbake.
  7. While dip bakes, prepare spiderweb: Spoon about 1/4 cup sour cream into a small zip-top bag. Snip off a tiny corner (about 1/8 inch).
  8. Remove dip from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Pipe a spiral of sour cream starting from the center and working outward, leaving about 1 inch between rings.
  9. Create web effect: Using a toothpick or knife tip, drag from the center outward through the sour cream lines (like spokes). Then drag from the outside inward between each spoke. Wipe toothpick clean between each drag.
  10. Add spiders: Place 3-4 sliced black olives in the center for the body, and arrange thin olive strips for legs (4 on each side).
  11. Serve immediately with tortilla chips.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature cream cheese and sour cream. Rinse beans well to avoid metallic taste. Let dip cool 2-3 minutes before piping spiderweb to prevent sour cream from melting. The dip can be made ahead (without web) up to 2 days in advance; bake just before serving. Leftovers keep refrigerated for up to 3 days.
