Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (120 g) vanilla frosting, homemade or store-bought
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) powdered sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp (1530 ml) milk, to adjust dip consistency
  • 1 1/2 cups (190 g) all-purpose flour (can substitute almond flour for gluten-free)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2 tbsp (25 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp (1530 ml) milk, to bring dough together

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dip (10 minutes): Beat softened cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth and fluffy (2-3 minutes). Add vanilla frosting and mix until combined. If desired, sift in powdered sugar and blend well. Stir in vanilla extract. Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time until creamy but dippable consistency is reached. Chill in fridge while making crackers.
  2. Make the Animal Crackers Dough (15 minutes): Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Rub cold cubed butter into flour mixture until coarse crumbs form. Stir in sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolk with vanilla and milk. Pour wet mix into dry ingredients and gently combine until dough just comes together. Avoid overworking.
  3. Chill the Dough (15 minutes): Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 15 minutes to firm up butter.
  4. Roll and Cut Crackers (10-15 minutes): Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly flour surface and roll dough to about 1/8-inch (3 mm) thickness. Cut into animal shapes or rectangles/circles. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet with space between crackers.
  5. Bake (12-15 minutes): Bake until edges are golden and crackers are firm but slightly soft in center. Avoid overbaking.
  6. Cool Completely: Transfer crackers to wire rack to cool fully for maximum crunch.
  7. Serve: Place dip in a bowl and surround with homemade animal crackers. Enjoy dunking!

Notes

Keep butter cold to achieve flaky, crunchy crackers. Chill dough before rolling to prevent spreading. Roll dough to about 1/8-inch thickness for perfect crunch. Check crackers a few minutes before baking time ends to avoid overbaking. If dip is too thick after chilling, stir in a splash of milk before serving. Store crackers separately from dip to maintain crunch. Reheat crackers at 300°F (150°C) for 5 minutes to refresh crispiness.
