This creamy slow cooker white hot chocolate with peppermint is the perfect holiday treat. Rich, velvety, and perfectly balanced between sweet and minty, the slow cooker does all the heavy lifting so you can enjoy your party.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) white chocolate chips
  • 4 cups (960 ml) whole milk
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract, plus more to taste
  • A pinch of salt
  • Crushed candy canes (for garnish, about 4-5 mini candy canes)
  • Whipped cream (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Prep your slow cooker. Give the insert a quick rinse and dry it. Plug it in and set it to low heat.
  2. Add the white chocolate chips. Pour all 12 ounces into the bottom of the slow cooker and spread them out.
  3. Pour in the milk and cream. Add the 4 cups of whole milk and 1 cup of heavy cream on top of the white chocolate chips. Don’t stir yet.
  4. Add the vanilla and salt. Drizzle in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and sprinkle in the pinch of salt.
  5. Whisk gently to combine. There will still be chunks of white chocolate, which is fine.
  6. Cook on low for 1.5 to 2 hours. After about an hour, give it a stir. The white chocolate should be mostly melted.
  7. Add the peppermint extract. Once the white chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth, stir in the 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract. Taste and add more if desired.
  8. Whisk until smooth. The mixture should be silky and pale ivory in color.
  9. Set to warm. Switch the slow cooker to the warm setting to keep the hot chocolate at serving temperature.
  10. Prepare your garnishes. Crush candy canes in a sealed ziplock bag with a rolling pin.
  11. Ladle into mugs, filling them about three-quarters full.
  12. Top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes. Add a whole mini candy cane as a stirrer if desired.
  13. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t rush the melting process; cook on low to prevent the white chocolate from seizing. Add peppermint extract at the end to preserve its flavor. If the mixture separates after sitting, whisk it back together. For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and dairy-free white chocolate chips.
