A quick, easy, and comforting casserole featuring crispy tater tots over a creamy, savory ground beef mixture, perfect for family meals and busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 bag frozen tater tots (about 32 oz)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (can mix with mozzarella)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, corn, or green beans)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if desired.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the beef. Cook for 3-4 minutes until onions are translucent and fragrant.
  4. In a mixing bowl, stir together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Optionally fold in frozen mixed vegetables.
  5. Pour the creamy mixture into the skillet with the beef and vegetables. Stir well to combine evenly; mixture should be thick and creamy, not soupy.
  6. Spread the beef mixture evenly in a 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle 1 ½ cups (150 g) of shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  7. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese, covering the entire surface.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until tots are golden brown and crispy and cheese is bubbly.
  9. Optional: Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup (50 g) of cheddar cheese on top during the last 5 minutes of baking for extra cheesy goodness.
  10. Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving to set.

Notes

Do not thaw tater tots before baking to maintain crispiness. Season beef mixture well with Worcestershire sauce for depth. Drain excess fat for less greasy casserole. Optional to add frozen mixed vegetables for color and nutrition. For dairy-free or gluten-free versions, substitute ingredients accordingly. Leftovers can be reheated in oven or microwave; broil to refresh crispiness.
