These black sesame spider cookies are the perfect last-minute Halloween treat—quick, easy, and naturally spooky without artificial dyes. Made with black sesame paste for a nutty, toasty flavor, they’re a crowd-pleaser that looks way more impressive than the effort you put in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50g) light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons black sesame paste
  • 1 1/2 cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • About 48 pretzel sticks (for spider legs)
  • 48 candy eyes (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy—about 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl once.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined. Then add the black sesame paste and mix on low until fully incorporated.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, portion out rounded tablespoons of dough (about 1.5 tablespoons each). Place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets. You should get about 24 cookies.
  6. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. The cookies will look puffy and slightly cracked on top. The edges should be set but the centers will still look soft.
  7. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely (about 15 minutes).
  8. Once the cookies are completely cool, use a small knife or skewer to gently poke 4 holes on each side of each cookie. Break each pretzel stick in half. Insert 4 pretzel halves into each side, angled slightly backward to look like spider legs.
  9. Dab a tiny bit of leftover dough or frosting on the back of each candy eye and press gently onto the top of the cookie. Place them close together for a cute spider face. Let the eyes set for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Don’t overmix the dough—overmixing develops gluten and makes cookies tough. Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Let cookies cool completely before adding legs to prevent crumbling. Store cookies and pretzels separately if making ahead to keep legs crunchy. The black sesame flavor deepens after a day or two.
