This Blood Orange Halloween Sangria is a festive, easy-to-make drink that combines blood oranges, pomegranate, and red wine for a spooky yet elegant party punch. It’s perfect for Halloween gatherings and can be prepared ahead of time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 45 medium blood oranges
  • 1 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1 apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup orange liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Tempranillo or Garnacha)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 cup sparkling water or ginger ale (for serving)
  • Ice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Wash the blood oranges and apple. Slice 2 of the blood oranges into thin rounds (about 1/4 inch thick). Juice the remaining 2-3 blood oranges to get about 1/2 cup of fresh juice. Slice the apple into thin half-moons. Set aside a few slices of each for garnish later.
  2. In a large pitcher or punch bowl, add the sliced blood oranges and apple. Pour the fresh blood orange juice over them. Use a wooden spoon or muddler to gently press down on the fruit 4-5 times to release juices and oils.
  3. Sprinkle in the pomegranate seeds and stir gently.
  4. Add the orange liqueur and brandy, then pour in the entire bottle of red wine. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Drop in the cinnamon sticks and stir once more.
  6. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  7. Just before serving, make an ice ring or fill a tray with ice cubes. For an ice ring, arrange a few slices of blood orange, some pomegranate seeds, and a cinnamon stick in a bundt pan, fill with water, and freeze.
  8. When ready to serve, remove the sangria from the fridge and gently stir in the sparkling water or ginger ale.
  9. Pour the sangria over the ice ring or ice cubes in individual glasses. Garnish each glass with a slice of blood orange and a few extra pomegranate seeds.

Notes

For best flavor, let the sangria chill overnight. If too tart, add a tablespoon of honey or agave syrup. If too sweet, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. For a non-alcoholic version, replace wine, brandy, and liqueur with sparkling grape juice and pomegranate juice.
