Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground turkey (93/7 lean)
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (15 oz each) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) fire-roasted diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ to ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for topping, optional)
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt (for topping, optional)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for topping, optional)
  • Diced avocado (for topping, optional)
  • Lime wedges (for serving, optional)
  • Crushed tortilla chips (for topping, optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain excess liquid if needed.
  2. Push the turkey to one side of the skillet. Add the diced onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir everything together.
  3. Sprinkle the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper over the turkey mixture. Stir and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the spices are fragrant.
  4. Transfer the turkey mixture to a 6-quart crockpot. Add the drained black beans, diced tomatoes (with juices), tomato sauce, and chicken broth. Stir to combine.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 8 hours or on HIGH for 3 to 4 hours.
  6. About 30 minutes before serving, taste and adjust seasoning. Add more salt, cayenne, or hot sauce if desired.
  7. Serve hot with desired toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, cilantro, avocado, lime wedges, and tortilla chips.

Notes

For best flavor, brown the turkey and bloom the spices before adding to the crockpot. If chili is too thick, add a splash of broth. If too thin, cook uncovered for 15-20 minutes. Chili tastes even better the next day.
