This Easy Halloween Mummy Cheese Ball is a creamy, savory appetizer wrapped in crispy phyllo strips, perfect for Halloween parties. It’s quick to make, uses simple ingredients, and is a crowd-pleaser that kids and adults love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives or parsley, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1012 phyllo dough strips, thawed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • Candy eyes or olive slices (for the mummy face)
  • Crackers of your choice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Take cream cheese out of fridge at least 30 minutes before starting. If in a rush, cut into cubes and microwave on low power for 10-second intervals until soft but not melted.
  2. Mix the cheese base: In a medium mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Use a hand mixer on low speed until smooth and well combined. Fold in fresh chives or parsley if using.
  3. Shape the mummy body: Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on counter. Scoop cheese mixture onto center and use wrap to form into a log shape about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. Twist ends tightly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 24 hours.
  4. Prepare the phyllo strips: While cheese ball chills, preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). If using whole phyllo sheets, cut into 1-inch wide strips lengthwise. Cover strips with a slightly damp paper towel to prevent drying.
  5. Bake the phyllo strips: Place strips on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush each lightly with olive oil or melted butter. Bake for 5-7 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Let cool completely.
  6. Assemble the mummy: Remove chilled cheese ball from fridge and unwrap. Place on serving platter. Wrap cooled phyllo strips around cheese log, leaving small gaps to mimic mummy bandages. Leave a small area at one end for eyes.
  7. Add the eyes: Press two candy eyes or olive slices into exposed cheese at the ‘head’ end. If using olives, use small slices. Add a tiny dab of cream cheese to hold them in place if needed.
  8. Chill again (optional but recommended): Refrigerate assembled mummy for 15-20 minutes to let everything set.
  9. Serve with crackers: Arrange crackers around mummy on platter. For Halloween vibe, add pretzel sticks or veggie sticks around edges.

Notes

Don’t skip the chilling step—it helps the cheese ball hold its shape. Keep phyllo covered with a damp paper towel to prevent drying. Use a light hand with oil to avoid soggy strips. For best texture, shred cheddar cheese yourself instead of using pre-shredded. Flavors improve after a day in the fridge.
