Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 cups (about 200g) fresh broccoli florets, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 3 tablespoons (60ml) honey
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) low-sodium soy sauce
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons water (slurry)
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep everything first: Pat shrimp dry with paper towels and season lightly with salt and pepper. Chop broccoli into bite-sized florets. Mince garlic. In a small bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes. In another small bowl, mix cornstarch with 2 teaspoons water to make a slurry.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil and let it get hot until shimmering.
  3. Sear the shrimp: Add shrimp in a single layer (cook in batches if needed). Cook undisturbed for 1-2 minutes until bottoms are pink and lightly browned. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until just cooked through. Transfer to a plate and set aside.
  4. Cook the broccoli: In the same skillet, add remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add broccoli florets and spread into an even layer. Cook undisturbed for 2 minutes to get charred spots, then stir and cook for another 1-2 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp. Add a splash of water and cover for 30 seconds if needed.
  5. Build the sauce: Push broccoli to one side of the skillet. Add minced garlic to the empty space and cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Pour in honey-soy sauce mixture and stir to combine. Let it bubble for about 30 seconds.
  6. Add the cornstarch slurry: Stir the slurry, then pour it into the skillet. Stir immediately. The sauce will thicken in 20-30 seconds until it coats the back of a spoon.
  7. Return the shrimp to the pan: Add cooked shrimp back to the skillet along with any juices. Toss everything together until shrimp and broccoli are evenly coated in sauce, about 30 seconds.
  8. Finish and serve: Remove from heat. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Serve immediately over steamed rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice.

Notes

Dry shrimp thoroughly for a good sear. Don’t overcook shrimp—they’re done when pink and curled into a loose C shape. Toast garlic carefully to avoid burning. Make cornstarch slurry fresh and stir before adding. For gluten-free, use tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce.
