This small batch bourbon eggnog is rich, creamy, and comes together in under 15 minutes with simple ingredients. Perfect for cozy holiday gatherings, it’s a crowd-pleaser that tastes like a real treat without the stress.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large eggs, separated
  • 1/4 cup (50 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) bourbon (e.g., Buffalo Trace or Maker’s Mark)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for garnish
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Separate the eggs, placing yolks in one medium bowl and whites in another. Ensure no yolk gets into the whites.
  2. Add sugar to the egg yolks and whisk vigorously until thick, pale, and ribbon-like (about 2-3 minutes).
  3. Pour in milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk until well combined and smooth.
  4. Slowly whisk in the bourbon until evenly incorporated. Set aside.
  5. Whip the egg whites with a clean whisk or hand mixer until soft peaks form (peaks curl over slightly). Do not over-whip.
  6. Fold about a quarter of the whipped whites into the bourbon-milk mixture to lighten it. Then gently fold in the remaining whites using a rubber spatula until no white streaks remain.
  7. Pour the eggnog into a pitcher or serving bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, to allow flavors to meld and texture to thicken.
  8. Serve chilled in small glasses, topped with a generous grating of fresh nutmeg.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature eggs. Freshly grated nutmeg is essential for flavor. The eggnog improves after a day in the fridge. To make a cooked version (if concerned about raw eggs), gently heat the milk and cream mixture, then temper into the yolks and cook until slightly thickened (170°F) before cooling and adding bourbon and whipped whites.
