Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 4 soft brioche buns or classic sesame seed buns, lightly toasted
  • 4 cheddar cheese slices (sharp or mild)
  • Swiss cheese slices (optional)
  • Leafy lettuce (romaine or green leaf), washed and crisp
  • Tomatoes, sliced
  • Red onions, thinly sliced
  • Dill pickle slices
  • 8 crispy bacon strips
  • Caramelized onions (optional)
  • Avocado slices
  • Jalapeño slices (optional)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (garlic mayo optional)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • Sriracha or hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, gently combine ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Divide into 4 even portions and shape each into a 3/4 inch thick patty with a slight indentation in the center. (5 minutes)
  2. Prepare toppings: slice tomatoes, red onions, avocado; wash and dry lettuce; arrange pickles, bacon, jalapeños in bowls. For caramelized onions, cook thinly sliced onion over low heat with oil and salt until golden (about 20 minutes). (15-20 minutes)
  3. Lightly butter the buns and toast on grill or skillet until golden and crisp. (5 minutes)
  4. Heat grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 4 minutes on first side without moving. Flip, add cheese slice, cook 3-4 more minutes for medium doneness. Adjust time for preferred doneness. (8-10 minutes)
  5. Set up burger bar with buns, patties, toppings, and sauces. Let everyone assemble their own burgers. Classic build: bottom bun, lettuce, patty with cheese, tomato, onion, pickles, bacon, sauce, top bun. (5 minutes)

Notes

Do not press patties while cooking to keep them juicy. Toast buns to prevent sogginess. Caramelized onions add sweet-savory depth but can be substituted with quick sautéed onions. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps. Turkey or plant-based patties can be used as alternatives.
